Based on the comic book "Here" by Richard McGuire

A generational story about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing love, loss, laughter and life. It was first published as a strip in the comic book magazine "Raw" in 1989 and expanded into a 300-page graphic novel in 2014. At one point early in the film, Richard’s father lists several towns that he believes are along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, when in fact they are all towns along Interstate 80 in PA, which had not yet been built at the time.. 'Here' is the fifth film directed by Robert Zemeckis starring Tom Hanks, and while it’s not a 2.5 hour epic spanning 3 decades like ‘Forrest Gump’, it somehow manages to span 65 million years. It does so through the cinematic trick of the camera sitting in one place, focusing on the living room of a house built in the early 19th century (presumably in New Jersey, USA), which includes several flashbacks to what was there at that location.

We then follow ~5 families at different times and their lives in the living room. It’s not all linear, but it’s not too confusing either, with the main story following how Al (Bettany) and Rose (Reilly) bought the house after World War II. They raise their four children there, and Richard (Hanks) is played by the old/Hanks of the “big” era ~16. He then meets an aging Margaret (Wright) and we watch them age in the house over the decades.

The editing is sometimes good, but often unnecessarily boring

There are some nice moments, some funny parts and a few sad scenes. Even though it’s a relatively short film, it probably didn’t need at least 2 of these stories! It tries to portray the small moments of life that make up the human experience. It’s close, but because of the jumping around, you don’t get too attached to anyone, so the poignancy is lost.
